On Our Merri Way: The Demo, Part II

More and more demo! After the ceilings were completed (removing the popcorn and retexturing), they finished removing all of the floors. The front tile ended up being trickier than our contractor thought – it was actually tiled over brick, with concrete four inches down. They had to jackhammer all of the brick and mortar out, and then pour concrete (which they did today) before they can lay the wood floors (next week!). Luckily in the grand scheme of things it was a small and manageable surprise.

They also finished gutting the bathrooms and kitchen. They all look so much better without the soffits.

They also removed the wall between the kitchen and living room.

Overall it’s exciting to see the potential – for example, our master bath already feels so much bigger without the expansive tile surrounding the tub and soffits over the tub and shower. The opening from kitchen to living room also feels nice, particularly because the kitchen has that huge window which is nice to see from the living room. We knew we didn’t want a completely open concept house but definitely wanted to get a little more space between the kitchen and living room.

You can also see a sneak peek of our fabulous wood ceiling in the picture above! We love it so, so much. They still have to put the trim around it and we have to make decisions on color: leaving it as-is, doing a light whitewash, or a heavier white stain…but we are completely in love with the idea of a wood ceiling and think it makes the room look amazing. Once we get everything else done (painted walls and brick, wood floors, etc), we think this room is going to be fantastic.
